Augusto Mesquita started his musical studies in Braga and studied Law in Coimbra’s University. He has a degree in Piano and Composition from Lisbon’s National Conservatory. He also attended several courses in Piano, Choral Conducting and Orchestral Conducting. He’s the composer of piano pieces and various choral and instrumental arrangements. As a pianist, he has performed solo or accompanying well known classic singers and orchestras. In the last few years he has also been composing for Orchestra, and has conducted dozens of concerts in Portugal and abroad. He was the conductor of several prestigious choirs, such as “Orfeão de Leiria”, and he was invited to conduct, among others, the “Coral do Estado do Amazonas”; he collaborated, conducted and made several music arrangements for national and international Orchestras. Since its inception in 2002, he is also the conductor of the Choral “Advocal”, and in 2003 he became the Artistic Director of the “Orquestra dos Antigos Tunos da Universidade de Coimbra” and its Tango Orchestra. In 2006 he founded the male choir “Alma de Coimbra”, and he’s also the author of all its musical arrangements. He also conducts “Cantemus” – the Youth Choir of Cantanhede. He’s the Artistic Director of Coimbra’s Music Festival since 2005. From 1994 to 1999 he was the Principal of Coimbra’s Music Conservatory and for 10 years he was the main conductor of the school’s Orchestra. On the 10th of June 1997 he was awarded the honour of “Grande Oficial da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique” (Grand Officer of D. Henrique’s Order).
